The Decolonizing Language Education Collective (DLEC) is an endeavour at unraveling and re-imagining the colonial constructions of foreign, second, heritage, and first languages. We examine the politics of knowing and being as it relates to language, its production, its speakers, and language education programmes.
Following the cues from other student-led initiatives within the Faculty of Education at Cambridge, such as the Race, Empire and Education (REE) Collective, The Politics of Representation Collective, Cambridge Latin American Research in Education Collective (CLAREC), Cambridge Peace and Education Research Group, and the most recent volume of the Cambridge Educational Research e-Journal (CERJ), our group aspires to be part of the wider and ongoing decolonial projects dotted throughout the world aimed at interrogating and transforming our institutions, epistemologies, societies, and emotions which remain imbued by the legacies of colonialism. We are acutely aware that we exist with(in) coloniality and shedding its heavy cloak is a process of continuous, uncomfortable and, at times, painful unpeeling. Cognisant of this, we acknowledge that this initiative is minuscule, but one that is laced with verve and hope towards the building of a decolonial future. Wherever you are, we welcome you to join the Decolonizing Language Education Collective!
